Publication of New Standard
At present ISO/FDIS 9001: 2008 is under voting and expected to be released before year end.
ISO/FDIS 9001: 2008 can be purchased from http://www.asq.org/.
Implementation guide / update guide / changes and new requirements are available at http://www.isohelpline.com/

What happens to existing certificates
All existing certificate will remain valid up to 24 months from date of publication of ISO 9001: 2008.
If the "renewal date" or "expiry date" is later than 24 months from date of publication of ISO 9001: 2008 than your certificate will expire earlier and you have to upgrade to ISO 9001: 2008.

Up to what date will I be able to get ISO 9001: 2000
Certification bodies will issue certification to ISO 9001: 2000 up to 12 months from date of publication of ISO 9001: 2008. The validity of such certificates will not be 3 years (as issued normally) but 24 months from date of publication of ISO 9001: 2008. For example if ISO 9001: 2008 is published on 15-Dec-2008, than all certificates issued for ISO 9001: 2000 will have expiry date of 14th Dec-2010.

What is the agreement between ISO and IAF
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and the IAF (International Accreditation Forum) have agreed an implementation plan to ensure a smooth migration of accredited certification to ISO 9001:2008, after consultation with international groupings representing quality system or auditor certification bodies, and industry users of ISO 9001 certification services.
The agreed implementation plan in relation to accredited certification is therefore the following:Accredited certification to the ISO 9001:2008 shall not be granted until the publication of ISO 9001:2008 as an International Standard. Certification of conformity to ISO 9001:2008 and/or national equivalents shall only be issued after official publication of ISO 9001:2008 (which should take place before the end of 2008) and after a routine surveillance or re-certification audit against ISO 9001:2008. Validity of certifications to ISO 9001:2000 One year after publication of ISO 9001:2008 all accredited certifications issued (new certifications or re-certifications) shall be to ISO 9001:2008.Twenty four months after publication by ISO of ISO 9001:2008, any existing certification issued to ISO 9001:2000 shall not be valid.
